The Basics
Gridle is a daily crossword puzzle that resets every morning with a brand-new grid and a fresh set of clues. The goal is the same as any crossword: fill every white square with the correct letter to spell out the answers to all the clues, both Across and Down.
What sets Gridle apart from a pencil-and-paper crossword is the interactive tile system. Instead of scribbling letters into boxes, you click on a tile, type on your keyboard (or tap the on-screen keys), and the letter drops straight into that square. The grid responds instantly — correct words light up with a satisfying highlight, and wrong letters give a quick shake so you know to reconsider. You always know where you stand without having to count squares or erase anything.
Step-by-Step: Playing Your First Puzzle
- Open today's puzzle. Visit gridle.quest — the puzzle loads automatically. No account, no download, no paywall.
- Read the clue list. Across clues are numbered left-to-right across each row. Down clues run top-to-bottom through each column. Both lists appear beside (or below, on mobile) the grid.
- Click or tap a tile. Selecting a tile highlights the full word it belongs to and displays the matching clue. Click the same tile again to switch between Across and Down.
- Type your answer. Use your physical keyboard or the on-screen keyboard at the bottom of the grid. Letters fill in from left to right (or top to bottom for Down words). Press Backspace to delete the last letter you entered.
- Watch for feedback. When you complete a word correctly, the tiles light up. If a letter is wrong, the tile shakes. Adjust, rethink the clue, and try again — there's no penalty for wrong guesses.
- Use crossing letters. Every letter in the grid belongs to both an Across word and a Down word. If you solve one word, the letters it shares with crossing words appear automatically. Those crossing letters are often the biggest hints for the words you haven't solved yet.
- Finish the grid. Once all squares are filled correctly, the puzzle is complete. You can share your result or browse the clue explanations to learn more about each answer.
Understanding Crossword Clues
Crossword clues come in several styles. Knowing the type makes solving much easier.
Descriptive clues
The most common type. The clue describes the answer directly by its function, appearance, or category. "Leafy green used in salads" → LETTUCE. If you know what the clue is describing, you know the answer. The tricky part is that the clue is usually shorter and more indirect than a full dictionary definition.
Wordplay clues (marked with ?)
Any clue ending in a question mark is a signal that wordplay is involved. The answer has a double meaning, a pun, or a twist on the wording. "Garlic unit?" → CLOVE (also a spice). Don't take these clues literally — look for the alternative angle.
Fill-in-the-blank clues
These clues have an obvious blank where the answer goes: "___ of the crop" → CREAM. Fill-in-the-blank clues are usually the easiest in any grid and are great starting points when you're stuck.
Abbreviation clues
Short answers (3–4 letters) often signal an abbreviation. The clue may say "abbr." explicitly, or the answer itself is a well-known shortened form. Common crossword abbreviations include directional initials, titles, and units of measurement.
Crossword Solving Tips
- Start with the short words. Three- and four-letter words have fewer possible answers and often appear frequently in crossword grids. Knocking out a few of these early gives you crossing letters for the harder words.
- Look for common word endings. Many crossword answers end in -TION, -ING, -ER, -EST, -ED, or -LY. If you know the clue suggests an action or description, these endings narrow the options quickly.
- Trust the crossing letters. If you're unsure about a clue, solve the words that cross it first. Each letter you fill in from a crossing word chips away at the possibilities for the harder clue.
- Read the clue aloud. Sometimes the meaning of a clue becomes clearer when you hear it rather than read it. This is especially true for wordplay clues where the trick is in the sound of the words.
- Take breaks. Experienced solvers know that stepping away for a few minutes often results in answers appearing instantly when you come back. Your brain keeps working in the background.
- Use the solver. If you're completely stuck, the Gridle crossword solver lets you enter a clue or fill in the letters you already know to find possible answers. It's a great learning tool — not just a shortcut.
- Read the explanations. Every clue in the puzzle links to a page explaining why that answer is correct. Reading a few of these each day is one of the fastest ways to improve your crossword vocabulary.
On Mobile
Gridle is fully optimised for phones. The grid scales to fit your screen, and the on-screen keyboard appears automatically when you select a tile. Tap any tile to select it, tap again to switch direction, and use the keyboard at the bottom to type your answer. A sticky clue bar at the top of the screen shows the active clue so you can always see what you're solving, even as you scroll.
